The Roots of Lily the Label
Hello! I'm Sophie, the founder, creator, manager, marketer and everything-in-between behind Lily the Label. Here is the story of how Lily the Label came to be:
It is often said that when you are being planted, it feels like darkness and death. That could not be more true for my story and the parallel history of Lily the Label. As with the seeds of plant, with time, space, light and love, myself and Lily the Label began to sprout and blossom, once again.
The concept of Lily the Label was created from my darkest of days battling chronic illness with a generous side of depression and anxiety. I found choosing positive thoughts and words to be incredibly powerful in my healing journey, and embroidery provided a distraction from the heaviness I experienced (and still does), helping me return to the present moment. Each piece I personally hand-design in Idaho and either machine or hand-stitch.
The name of the brand is deeply significant for me. The smell of lilies brings me back to my childhood as my paternal grandmother often had fresh lilies on her dining room table. About a year prior to starting Lily the Label, my grandma passed away. I felt guided to incorporate my grandma, her wisdom and love for lilies into my brand as a way to honor her as well as incorporating my spiritual faith into the foundation of the brand. Matthew 6:28-29 had been a anchor and beacon of hope for me as it directs us toward the beauty of the flowers (lilies specifically) and the power of God to create beauty out of dirt and hard times.
My entrepreneurial spirit and desire to gather community sparked long ago before I can remember. My first recollection of my pursuit of business is in elementary school when my best friend and I were sure we could create and sell handmade lotions from conditioner, Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer and glitter, of course. We then packaged the "lotion" concoction in recycled Snapple bottles and made a promotional video with my dad's video camera. In the summers of our childhood, my sister and I would pop up with lemonade stands in our neighborhood. My freshman year of college I started The Good 'Ol Girls Club (which lasted about 2 meetings), a place for girls to dive deeper, journal and connect with others. A year before Lily the Label was created, around the time my grandma was preparing to leave earthside, I was brainstorming a different clothing business with a friend. As you can see, I have always felt an itch to have my own business.
The intention of each piece I design and create is to remind you of the beauty, strength and light within yourself and the world, as I have learned and lived the truth of the transformative power of words. Words, positive and negative help create our reality. I find positive affirmations to be a guide back to the truth and a carrier through the hardest of times. My hope is you feel uplifted in your experience with Lily the Label, and feel inspired to speak a bit kinder lighter, more truthful to yourself because of the clothes and accessories you purchase with us. Have a beautiful day, you are so worthy of it!
xoxo,
Sophie
P.S. you are SO loved!
